Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic holistic medicine focuses on an understanding of the origins of acute and chronic disease and works to support and assist the body’s natural ability to heal. Naturopathic Doctors identify the disease as a process, as opposed to an entity, and recognize that symptoms and signs of disease are a way of telling us that our bodies are imbalanced and not functioning optimally. Naturopathic assessment, diagnosis and treatment of the individual patient are accomplished by integrating holistic modern and traditional care which includes clinical and laboratory diagnostic techniques, herbal medicine, acupuncture and Asian medicine, and clinical nutrition. Naturopathic medicine is evidence-based, informed by clinical experience, research and the individual patient’s unique health situation.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the insertion of thin, metal needles to stimulate specific points of the body. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, Qi circulates in the body through a system of channels called meridians. Qi can be stimulated in the body through over 500 acupuncture points on the surface and flows to deeper organ structures. The stimulation of Qi in the meridians allows the body to rebalance from the negative impacts of daily life and disease. Science has now revealed that acupuncture affects the body through the nervous and hormonal systems.

Mental Wellness

There are mental health issues unique to women. Economic, political, and social forces influence women’s mental health.

Life events and hormonal changes can affect women’s mental health.

  • Perinatal depression: Having a baby is a life-changing event. For some women, it can trigger postnatal depression (after birth) and/or antenatal depression (during pregnancy). The term ‘perinatal depression’ covers both. Perinatal depression isn’t a sign of weakness and it doesn’t mean you’re a bad parent. There is help available: talking therapy, medication or specialist services depending on your symptoms and what’s right for you.
  • Menopause: While every woman’s experience of menopause is different, many women find they have symptoms in addition to their periods stopping. These can include changes to your mental health such as mood swings, anxiety and feeling low. Treatment includes hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or talking therapy.

Naturopathic Birth Doula

Our Naturopathic Birth Doula experts are trained and experienced professionals who assist women before, during, and after childbirth, as well as her partner and/or family by providing information, physical assistance (natural pain management), and emotional support utilizing Naturopathic modalities. Research has shown that support during labour by a Doula is associated with improved maternal and fetal health, shorter labour time, fewer complications, positive feelings toward the labour and birthing process, reduced need for medical intervention, and shorter hospital stays.
